Top 10 Best Podcasts for Truckers
Perhaps you are tired of listening to the same tunes on the radio, and want to listen to something a little more insightful as you drive your big rig from coast to coast. This is where podcasts come in.
Podcasts are like radio shows, but you do not have to listen to them live and can turn them on and off at your leisure. There are podcasts that cover specific topics, and those that cover a wide range of ideas. Here are our picks for podcasts you should be listening to!
- The Joe Rogan Experience
- Talk CDL Trucking Podcast
- What The Truck?!? Podcast
- This American Life
- Big Rig Banter
- Red Eye Radio
- Serial
- Armchair Expert
- Pardon My Take
- Jocko Podcast
10. Jocko Podcast
Jocko Willink, retired Navy SEAL officer, hosts a podcast about leadership, business, and self-improvement.
While not directly related to the trucking industry, many of the things he talks about can relate directly to the average trucker and patriot, which is why his podcast with over 278 episodes resonates so well with its viewer base.
Additionally, the website has a repertoire of key quotes either said or quoted in the show. One such example is “If you live your life with regrets, then you never move forward. — Jody Mitic”, but you likely will not regret listening to the Jocko Podcast.
9. Pardon My Take
Pardon My Take is a show about two things as consistent in American society as trucking itself: sports and opinions.
Co-hosts Big Cat and PFT Commenter update every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Even if you are not a fan of sports, it may be worth checking in on them every once in a while when they debate things not related to sports, such as whether or not it is okay to clap at a movie theatre when the film is over (Go Capital’s opinion: if nobody who worked on the film is present, it makes no sense).
8. Armchair Expert
Dax Shepard interviews people. A lot of people. No matter who you are, browsing through the episode list you will be hard-pressed to not recognize at least a few of them. The episodic nature of podcasts means that if you do not know who Ezra Klein is, you can skip the episode and instead listen to an episode interviewing someone else.
7. Serial
Contrasted to the previous entry on the list, Serial seasons tell a story across multiple episodes, so you can strap in and enjoy the ride for hours at a time, perfect for a trucker. When not on the road, the website has bonus content such as maps, letters, and call logs for those who really want to dig their fingernails into the story.
6. Red Eye Radio
The first directly trucking-related podcast on our list, Red Eye Radio is technically cheating by having its live show recorded and available for download later on. The show talks about truck maintenance and regulations, but also covers things not directly related to trucking that a trucker might want to know about, such as current national events.
5. Big Rig Banter
An oddball combination of number 8 and 6 on the list, Big Rig Banter interviews people from the trucking industry on what they do to keep the industry and the nation moving forward. The episodes mostly have a focus on timeless content, so even the first episode from 2017 is mostly relevant today. With about 40 minutes per episode, there is at least 50 hours of content here.
4. This American Life Podcast
This one gets on the list just by the sheer tidal wave of content there is. 750 episodes, with at least 3 stories each episode, you are sure to find at least one story worth listening to. Not sure where to start digging to find the diamonds? The website has a filter function to sort on topics ranging from Activism to Work.
3. What the Truck?!? Podcast
Three times a week, Dooner and the Dude spend an hour yakking about the latest and greatest in the trucking industry. Content is a mix of timely (Suez Canal jam) and timeless (how to be a truckerpreneur).
2. Talk CDL Trucking Podcast
Talk CDL Trucking Podcast calls itself “the number one trucking podcast on planet Earth.” It certainly has a hard focus on trucking for every minute of the episode, when compared to other entries on the list. If you are a hardcore trucker who breathes exhaust and drinks diesel, this is almost certainly the podcast for you.
1. The Joe Rogan Experience
The former host of Fear Factor has been producing podcast episodes for over a decade, and it is amazing to see how the production value has spiked in the over 1,600 episode series.
The Joe Rogan Experience can probably be best described as a combination of Armchair Expert, Jocko Podcast, Pardon My Take, and This American Life. While not directly trucking related, its large amount of content combined with its popularity and ubiquitous relevance lands it at number 1 for us.
The Bottom Line
There are thousands of podcasts that a trucker can look for that tailor to different interests. In making this list, we focus on podcasts that chances are would appeal to the most amount of truckers. This is not to say that other podcasts about politics or cooking are necessarily bad, just that they may not be of interest to you.
