USDOT Awards $1.5 Billion in Federal Infrastructure Grants
What’s New?
On Thursday, Sept. 15 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that the Biden-Harris Administration has awarded $1.5 billion for highway, multimodal freight, and rail projects that will make the nation’s transportation systems safer and more resilient.
“Today we are announcing transformative investments in our nation’s roads, bridges, ports, and rail to improve the way Americans get around and help lower the costs of shipping goods,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
“Using funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are able to support more excellent community-led projects this year than ever before.”
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will result in more than a 50% increase in funding in an attempt to meet the high demand for the federal government to support national infrastructure projects.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will provide about $8 billion for the INFRA program, including the $1.5 billion that was made available during this round of funding.
Applicants were able to submit one application for three different grant programs, including INFRA, Rural Surface Transportation Grant Program (RURAL), and National Infrastructure Project Assistance Program (Mega).
Winners for those RURAL and Mega will be announced in the following months.
INFRA projects were evaluated based on safety, job creation, climate change efforts and resiliency, impacts on equity and quality of life, application of innovative technology, cost-effectiveness, and demonstrated project readiness.
USDOT also awarded a significant amount of funding to rural areas, historically disadvantaged communities, and areas where poverty is persistent. Interestingly enough, the official statement from USDOT does not actually say how much funding.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also expanded INFRA eligibility to, wildlife crossings, marine highway corridors, and surface transportation projects.
